Blog hop – Art with Fabric – 2016.10.13

Welcome to my stop on the Art with Fabric Blog Hop!

A couple of months ago, Alida from Tweety Loves Quilting contacted me to see if I would like to participate in the Fall edition of her Art with Fabric blog hop.  Of course, I immediately said yes!

The concept is for each participant to create a quilt or fabric project inspired by a “conventional” (i.e. non-textile) piece of art – such as a painting, a drawing, sculpture, architecture, or even a book, song or poetry.  There are more than 20 participants who will post their artistic fabric creations between October 10 and 16, 2016.  The complete schedule is on Alida’s blog.

My inspiration – I love the challenge of interpreting architectural structures with fabric and thread – making them look solid and three-dimensional by using perspective and value.  So for my inspiration, I picked a massive piece of public art located in Westminster Pier Park, in New Westminster BC.  The WOW Westminster is a 140-foot installation, comprising four forty-foot shipping containers precariously cantilevered to form a W-shape.  It was designed by Brazilian artist José Resende and was installed in 2015.

I find the WOW installation to be visually appealing, due to the strong diagonal linear shapes and the interesting contrast with the bridges behind it.  I’m fascinated by the angles and perspective of this piece of art.

I wanted to capture the impressive size of the sculpture, so I took many photos from various angles. These are two of my favorites. In the first one, I like the position of the bridge in the background. But I much prefer the orientation of the W in the second photo.  So I decided to use artistic license and combine the two photos for my design.

My art quilt – I won’t make you read all the way to the bottom to see the finished quilt – here it is.   (But if you’re interested in how I made my full size pattern and how I constructed the quilt, continue reading.)

And here are a couple of detail images.

My design process – as noted above, I combined two of my photos to make the design for my art quilt.   On the computer, I edited each photo, using the ‘pencil sketch’ effect to make a line drawing, then created a mirror image.  (I use the mirror image to trace the pattern pieces onto paper-backed fusible web.)   I printed both photos at full size (20 x 20 inches).  Then I cut out the W and positioned it over the other photo.

For an architectural structure to look realistic, it’s important to get the perspective and shading right.   I needed to make sure I had enough value differences  to make the structure look three-dimensional and solid.  So I auditioned a lot of orange and rust-colored fabrics before starting construction.  I love using commercial prints in unexpected ways, so when I found some floral prints in the right colors and values, I used them for the foremost container.  From a distance you only notice the color and value.  As you get closer to the quilt, the prints add visual texture and interest.  I’m especially fond of the dark pink patches in one of the prints.

My construction process – I constructed and quilted the background and the W separately, then stitched the W to the background at the end of the construction process.  I used eco-felt for batting.

I cut black eco-felt in the shape of the W, then fused the fabrics in place.  I folded the outside seam allowances to the back of the felt and glued them in place.  Then I quilted the corrugated ridges.

For the background, I quilted the sky fabric to white eco-felt.  Then I added the trees, river and foreground.  I quilted the background before I added the bridge.  I positioned and fused the bridge components, then straight stitched the edges and the cables.  I used pencil crayons to add details to the bridge towers.  Then the platforms beneath the W were fused and quilted.  And finally the W was attached to the background by stitching through all the layers.

The edges are faced.  The finished size is 20 x 20 inches. I haven’t come up with a title yet.  The working title is WOW, but I’m thinking of words like: angles, perspective, diagonal, rust.  I’d love suggestions for a title for this art quilt.

Here’s another photo of the whole quilt.  I love how the colors pop when it has a black background behind it.

Thanks for reading all the way through.  I hope you enjoyed learning about my design and construction processes.  Make sure you check out the other participants in the blog hop – the complete schedule is on Alida’s blog.

Bits and pieces of news – 2016.10.12

Bits and pieces of news . . .

The Fibre Art Network (FAN) annual networking retreat was held last week in Winnipeg.  We spent four days sharing our work and inspiration with each other, shopping, touring local galleries, walking in the woods, eating, drinking and talking.  It was an opportunity to re-connect with old friends, and to make new ones.  We shared information, talked about our progress as artists, and made plans for new group exhibitions.  We had a couple of workshops to get our creative juices flowing.

The first was Art Journaling with Heidi Hunter of Runs with Scissors.  We each received a Sharpie and a sketchbook, and Heidi took us through some fun drawing exercises.  Here are my sketches.

We also had a Zentangles workshop taught by Carol of Tangled Inklings.   We each got a 4 x 4 inch card tile, and Carol took us step-by-step through the process of making Zentangle art.  Here is my tile, and the tiles of all the participants – looks like a quilt!

The newest Fibre Art Network (FAN) exhibition Ekphrastic opened at the La Conner Quilt and Textile Museum on October 5th.  The Ekphastric exhibition is a unique showcase of the collective talents of Canadian poets and fibre artists.

This Saturday, October 15th in the afternoon is the artists reception, and many of the artists (and hopefully some of the poets) will be there to speak about their work.  I hope to go down, but it will depend on whether the approaching storm is as fierce as is being predicted.

You can see the poems and the fiber art here.  My piece is ‘The Edge of the Pond‘.  You can read about how I made it here.

The annual SAQA online auction is over.  It was the most success auction in SAQA’s history, with more than 370 quilts sold, raising over $75,000!  The money raised will help provide a world of opportunity and exposure for art quilts and the artists who create them!

You can see all of the quilts here.

My contribution ‘Koi Pond‘ was the prototype for ‘The Edge of the Pond‘.

New portrait quilt – 2016.09.17

Last week, I saw that the deadline had been extended for the Quilting Arts ‘Who Do You Love?’ reader challenge.  Even though I have a couple of other projects on the go, I decided to set them aside for a few days, and create a quilt for the challenge.

I have a great photo of my husband, that I have been meaning to turn into an art quilt portrait.  It was taken on a sailing vacation, and has wonderful side-lighting.   After doing some digital editing and manipulation of the image, I asked my husband what color he would like to be – blue it is!   You will notice that the photo is somewhat pixelated, but I think that adds interest to the finished quilt.

original-photo-cropped  posterized-and-colored-blue

I printed the photo on fabric, then fused on the sunglasses and stitched them.  I drew in the details – facial features and hair – with a blue crayon pencil.  Then I thread-sketched the details with navy thread.  The letters are fused and outlined with blue pencil crayon.

The title of the quilt is ‘U R my Sunshine’ and the finished size is 10″ x 10″ (as required by the challenge rules).

‘Art with Fabric’ blog hop coming soon – 2016.09.12

A couple of months ago, Alida from Tweety Loves Quilting contacted me to see if I would like to participate in her Fall ‘Art with Fabric’ blog hop.  Of course, I immediately said yes!

The concept is for each participant to create a quilt or fabric project inspired by a non-textile piece of art, such as a painting, a drawing, sculpture, architecture, or even a book, song or poetry.  There are 25 participants, and the schedule is on Alida’s blog.  I’m in the first group, who will blog about our creations on Monday, October 10, 2016.

I’m just going to show you a couple of peeks at my project – my very messy worktable and a portion of the background of my quilt.  You’ll have to wait until October 10th to see the entire quilt, and learn about my inspiration.

Meanwhile, check out Alida’s blog for links to the participants in her previous ‘Art with Fabric’ blog hop.  There are some pretty impressive works to see.

And, if you want even more inspiration, check out SAQA’s blog post about the artists who donated quilts to the SAQA benefit auction, and who blogged about the creation of their quilts (including me!)

Don’t forget to check back on October 10th, when I will reveal all the details about my entry to the ‘Art with Fabric’ blog hop.

New art quilt – the details – 2016.08.31

Every fall, members of The Fibre Art Network (FAN) meet somewhere in Western Canada for our annual retreat and planning meeting.  This year, we will meet in Winnipeg MB in early October.

The theme is “Gateways and Portals”.  The retreat announcement says “We will be asking everyone to participate in a challenge again this year. The pieces are to be 8 ½” x 11”, and designed to fit with our theme. We would like people to try and use a technique that is new to them in creating their piece.”

The theme brought to mind my photos of interesting doors and windows from our trip to Croatia in 2013.  Here are several of the photos I considered for this project.

TerryAske_Croatia portals

On the left below is the photo I decided to use.  Using photo editing software, I cropped it and boosted the contrast – right image.

Croatia door - original photo  Croatia door - cropped and added contrast

When I was happy with the look of the photo, I printed it onto fabric.  In the past, I have used commercially prepared 8.5 x 11 inch sheets to print photos on fabric.  As the finished size of this project must be 8.5 x 11 inches, and I needed a seam allowance around the edges, I needed a larger size.  I have a printer that will take paper up to 13 inches wide, so I decided to use Bubble Jet Set to prepare my own fabric.  After the fabric dried, I ironed it to freezer paper, cut it to 10 x 13 inches, inserted the prepared sheet into my printer’s paper tray and printed my photo.

I let it dry for 30 minutes, then (with some apprehension) rinsed it in lukewarm water.  To my relief, there was no loss of ink.

I wanted to emphasize the roughness of the rock wall and the depth of the inset door, so I quilted the foreground rock surfaces with one layer of batting.  Then I added a second layer of batting and quilted the grout between the rocks and the surface of the door.  The sections that were quilted through both layers of batting receded and the other sections puffed up, giving the quilt a dimensional trapunto effect.

TerryAske_first layer of quilting_front TerryAske_first layer of quilting_back TerryAske_2nd layer of quilting_back

I was very happy with the dimensional quality of the finished piece.  As usual with my art quilts, I finished it with a facing.
