At the beginning of 2015, I decided to start a new series of tree quilts. The new series will be more abstract than my previous series. Each quilt will be 36 inches long and widths will vary from 14 to 18 inches. They will all feature a tree or two, but each one will have different techniques.
The trees will be based on one of the photos below, or possibly even more abstract like this quilt.
‘Exuberant Trees’ Completed in January 2015. For the first quilt in this series, I selected non-realistic colors to force myself towards the abstract concept. I had a fabulous multicolored piece of fabric in my stash for the tree, set against a background of black & white fabrics. Read about my process here.
‘Foggy Winter Day’ Completed in February 2015, the second tree was inspired by the very foggy weather we had in the Vancouver area. While driving, I noticed the ghostly shapes of trees in the fog, and knew I had to try to reproduce the effect in an art quilt. See more about my process here.
‘Spring is in the Air’ Completed in February 2016. An abstract interpretation of a Cherry Blossom tree. Read about my process here.
‘Wildfire’ Completed in June 2016. An abstract interpretation of a tree surrounded by a forest fire. Read about my design and construction process here, here, here, and here.
