On my design wall – 2013.11.13

DSCN2901I was thinking about quilting this quilt with a serpentine stitch.  Thank goodness I tested the serpentine stitch on a leftover block, because I saw that it really didn’t work with the skinny lines – it made them look really wobbly.  I’ll save that stitch for another quilt.

So, back to my original plan of horizontal straight-line stitching.   I was thinking of a medium gray binding, but instead went with my default color – chartreuse.  I’m really happy with how it looks – in fact, I think this is my favorite modern quilt I’ve made to date. I didn’t have a sketch or plan – just an idea in my head, and it turned out even better than I had imagined it.  I’ll be showing at the VMQG meeting next week, as my entry to the Michael Miller Cotton Couture challenge.

Just found a picture of this awesome quilt on Pinterest. I’ve been making something similar but much smaller, with my contemporary journal quilts. I was wondering if you could tell me what colour thread you use for quilting when you are crossing dark and light fabrics? Or is it an invisible?

      Hi Heather,
I keep a lot of notes on each of my quilts, and I’m so proud of myself when I go back to check something like this, and find that I actually wrote it down! I used a very light gray thread in the white section, then a light gray, then a medium gray, and in the black section I used a dark gray thread.
