On my design wall

I made 2 entries for the Cloth Paper Scissors Make Mine Mini reader challenge and submitted them today.  This was a fun challenge for me.  Working in a miniature scale made me look at my fabric scraps in a whole new light!

Rainy Day People – A few months ago, I started designing an art quilt featuring silhouettes of pedestrians with colorful umbrellas.  I reduced the size of the ‘umbrella people’ for this challenge.  I used a gel medium to adhere the background fabrics to a 4” x 4” mini artist canvas, then fused the ‘umbrella people’ to the background.  The umbrella spokes are drawn with a permanent marker.

Scrappy Maple Leaf – Then, I got more adventurous and created a fabric collage of a maple leaf.  I adhered scraps directly to the mini canvas with the gel medium, first the background, then the leaf and stem pieces, adding scraps until I was pleased with the result.

  1. I love your umbrella people, Terry … such a great Vancouver image!

  2. Wendy says:

Your rainy day people are superb and the detail of the spines on the umbrellas too. You’ve captured the movement and the mood so well.

I love the leaves Terry. I love the bright colors!

  4. marginmirror says:

Your umbrella pedestrians hit just the right note — all that black and grey and then the delight of the colourful brollies! And that leaf is gorgeous. I’m very interested in how you did the blue and yellow leaves on that tree…like crazy patch but tinier..

The tree quilt is about 50 x 50 inches, so the pieces aren’t as tiny as they might appear in the photo. It is pieced rather like a crazy quilt – I hadn’t thought about it that way before. Check out my other posts about the Tree quilt to see more about the process I used.

  5. Cathy says:

Love your quilts, they are a bit different than ordinary quilts.

  9. Régina says:

Great works all, but I am afraid your umbrella people will have to climb onto my to-do-list.

  10. Really lovely. I love your tree- the bright blues and yellows set it off. I’d like to see some detailed shots of the piecing and quilting, when you can. What are the dimensions? Best wishes for getting into the Canadian National Juried Show! Warmly,
    Christina
